A new day arrived (Tuesday, September 25) and with it a new concern, nothing has been recovered from yesterday’s search and we decided we had to entrust the work to the professionals, so let’s get to work, call a specialized data recovery company and see what happens. The company people arrived at 14:00, meanwhile, I was giving explanations and trying to get the company file server and internet back up and running.
The disk people promised to have an evaluation of the damage by the second day, the result would tell us: The probability of data recovery, how long it would take them, and how much they would charge.
By Wednesday morning (pressured by half the office) I called to ask about the disk and they told me: “The truth is that since it’s a disk with Linux + RAID partition, we must start regardless, if we find it costs 400USD, if not then you have to pay 60USD.” I asked around and they told me: “Let them start,” so off it went. They promised they would achieve it in two days maximum, it was just a matter of waiting…
Thursday 15:00, the white-feathered boss approaches very seriously and says: “Pablo, give me the number of these people so I can call them.” 5 minutes later I was in the boss’s office hearing the explanations: “You know, since it’s a RAID array, we’re only finding fragments of the information and we need the other disk to be able to find everything.” I went half cold and told them: “What??? I can’t leave the company without the server, do you work weekends? I can give you the disk so you can search over the weekend.” Finally we agreed that they would come Friday afternoon to take away the other disk.
Friday 17:00, everyone is notified, the server stops working at 18:00, backups were made of the shared disk files and we wait for the technicians, who finally appear at 18:25 to take the disk with the promise to return it Monday morning.
Sunday 17:00, the elections closed, I don’t know what happened, however I call the technicians to know what happened to my disk and the only response I got was: “We are processing your disks, tomorrow morning the engineer will bring your disk and he will explain what happens with your data.” The concern returned.
Monday 8:00, my disk hasn’t arrived yet, I wait until 8:30 for it to arrive and the news I receive is: “We processed it all night, but we found nothing. One of the engineers had an idea, so we’re going to try it, tomorrow noon we have news for you.” That same afternoon I communicated the bad news to my boss. There’s nothing, everything is lost, I have to recover everything again.
Tuesday morning, “Nothing has worked, let’s give the last desperate attempt to recover your data. We are interested in recovering that data as much or more than you are, since without the data we don’t get paid.” At night the response was the same: “We couldn’t find anything, tomorrow we bring you your disk.”
So the great conclusion of the story is… it was forced, everything is lost and now I have to search for data throughout the company to be able to rebuild as much information as possible. I trust to recover the bulk of the information which can be between 60 and 70% of what existed before. Long days are coming…
That’s the price of growing and being big, paying dearly for your mistakes and receiving few praises for your successes. But it doesn’t matter, because in the end… everything will be fine… jejejeje
